Legend has it

Legend has it that the foundation of the town of Amalfi is linked to a mythological love story in which the demigod Hercules was the protagonist.

Myth has it that the demigod fell head over heels in love with the young and beautiful nymph, Amalfi, and decided to marry her, but their love was short-lived because the nymph died prematurely and the hero, grief-stricken by the tragedy and with a broken heart, wanted to bury her at the most magical place on earth.

Hercules built a town on her tomb which he named after his beloved nymph: Amalfi. And that is how, legend has it, the town, that today gives its name to the entire Amalfi Coast, was born.
